What Is A Herniated Disc?

Individuals who suffer from back pain, leg weakness and pain are often diagnosed with having a herniated disc. However, the real question is, what exactly is a herniated disc and what causes it?

The term “herniated disc” refers to a problem with one of the discs (or cushions) between the vertebrae that make up your spine. Each one of your spinal discs has a tough exterior surrounding a soft interior. Herniated disks occur as a result of the soft interior of your spinal disc pushing out through a crack in the tough exterior.

When this happens, the herniated disc may then irritate nearby nerves, resulting in pain, numbness or weakness in your leg, back or even your arm.

Herniated discs are often the result of the normal wear and tear of aging. As we grow older, our spinal discs become less flexible which leaves them prone to tearing or rupturing from even just minor movements.

Although it is rare, experiencing a traumatic fall or blow to the back can also cause a herniated disc.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

Treatments for a herniated disc range from anti-inflammatory medicine to cortisone shots to physical therapy. In some cases, surgery is recommended, however because of its invasive nature and risks involved, it is always wise to seek out the help of a chiropractor before considering surgery.

At Frye Chiropractic, we are experienced in helping our patients who suffer pain from herniated discs. Through a series a chiropractic adjustments, we are able to help our patients with their herniated disc pain.

In fact, a recent study published by the National University of Health Sciences, shows that 76% of patients reported significant improvement in their herniated disc pain after 3 months with regular spinal manipulative therapy treatments.
